It looks like this painting was created specially as a wedding gift for Family members Cam McQuatt and his Wife Jean (based on the detailed notations on the backside of the painting). This brightly coloured painting comes from Donald's sought after "Howe Sound BC Paintings Series" that Donald painted between the 1928 and 1971 (and then in 1985 for this painting).

It realistically shows the actual beautifully coloured Ocean water of the Howe Sound which turns a bright teal colour in Spring/ Summer as it is fed from the surrounding mountain glaciers. The painting has several elements that Dr. DM Flather was known for in his paintings - excellent perspective and his bold use of colour. Another theme present in this painting is Donald's concern for the environment - with the bleached "burnt out" tree carcasses. Donald became aware of (and very concerned about) man's negative impact on nature well before it became popularized and before environmental potection organizations ever existed.

The setting is in the Howe Sound Region that lay between Vancouver and Squamish/ Whistler, BC..

Donald was a highly "unusual Artist" in the sense that we are not aware of any attempts for Donald to sell his paintings. Rather, it is apparent that he painted for the true love of painting - much preferring to gift his best paintings to friends and Family.
