Miss
Sophia is one of the earliest original oil paintings
that was catalogued by Donald - showing that he completed
it in 1919. To Donald's Grandson David, the painting
represents a somewhat surreal or mystical woman that
Granddad made up. Present in this interesting painting
is Donald's early treatment of what David refers to
as "stylized trees" - which is a treatment
that Donald often used in paintings later in his career.
This stylized treatment involves flowing curvy forms
and was often found in his water (rivers/ ocean) paintings
as well as his paintings featuring clouds.
